This Black History Month, we’re giving back to the people. Not to multi million dollar companies, not to white owned companies, back to THE PEOPLE. This print was made to encapsulate a personal understanding of the black experience. One of the key elements being the bamboo earring. It is the most classic example of what I would like to call “ghetto until proven trendy“. This idea plays into the date of the bottom left-hand corner, 1998. That is the year that gave the slow birth of our Y2k and 90s aesthetic. The sagging pants, the logomania and more “street“ looks were all elements of black culture and excellence. As you look farther into the work, more of the recognizable elements begin to unfold. Such discovery through the piece feels familiar within the black experience; an ever-growing appreciation and nostalgic fondness.
